Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
Who was the best penalty taker?

Too young to have ever personally seen Ray Stewart so gotta pick Julian.

Stewart always featured heavily on those videos from the 90s like Right Hammerings etc

Dicks .... scored 36 missed 7
Noble .... scored 36 missed 4 (this figure may be out of date)

Raymond STEWART
Scored 76 (SEVENTY SIX) missed 10

Of the 10 misses 3 were scored on the rebound. 2 by Stewart himself & one by Paul Goddard

I don’t think there is any contest

Never knew Dicks missed 7, thought it was only 1 (when he still had hair)

TONKA.

All day long.

Re: Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
Leaving statistics aside for a few seconds, Stewart showed he had balls of steel by scoring penalties in several high pressure situations, eg v Villa last minute in the cup, v Liverpool last minute in the league cup final, v several teams in the last couple of months of the famous 85/86 season.

There is no contest.

Those numbers are from a Newham Recorder article in Sept 2019

Stewart of course scored in the last minute of the 1980 FA Cup quarter final v Villa and the 120th min at Wembley in the League Cup final v Liverpool in 1981.

Iron Dukes explanation says it all really. The last minute pen v Liverpool must have been a real nerve jangler. Shame we lost the replay.

Re: Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
That's kind of a chance thing. Dunno if anyone can really say for sure Dicks would have missed (not saying that's what you're implying)

What was Ray Stewart's status like among fans back then? Anything comparable to Julian's in the 90s?

Re: Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
Also remember Ray Stewart’s penalty against Ipswich in 86 when the title was still on the line.

Di Canio had a pretty decent record from the spot with one notable exception.

Re: Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
Stewart for me. Inspired confidence from the spot.

Although a reputation for hitting them very hard, he went through a spell of side foot placing (like in the League Cup final). Always preferred it, when he hit them.

I always expected him to score, which I don't with Noble, even though Noble has, a very similar percentage conversion rate.

According to Sven's figures Noble is the better.

Re: Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
Wonder if Noble's record is even better compared to Stewart's?

Back in Stewart's day, keepers (in theory) couldn't move their feet, until the ball was struck. Now keepers can move side ways, as much as they like.

Also video analysis. i'd say keepers are much better prepared in Noble's era, in where a regular penalty taker may put the ball.None of that in Stewart's day.

Although the balls are a lot lighter today, not sure spin and swerve on a ball is deliberately imparted at a penalty kick.

I remember when that rule first changed.

IIRC goalkeepers could move around a bit originally anyway and the rule changed in the 50s?

May well be wrong.

No change in the rules on goalkeeper conduct at a penalty kick, regarding movement, from 1930 (when he was required not to move his feet until the ball was struck) until 1997 (when he was allowed to move his feet, before the kick was taken).

Pretty sure the refs were fairly lenient on keepers' pre-kick foot movements before they became legal.

Yes, penalty retakes seemed to be rare. As they still are, even if a keeper's come off his line, to make a save.

Fair enough

Just remember when it was changed in the 90s there was talk about it being closer to the old rules etc

Tell ya what you don't see much these days... indirect free kicks in the box

Julian all day long ... we was virtually a one man team fora few years... yup a left back being our main man... he was magnificent

Mad Dog 1:04 Fri Apr 17
Re: Ray Stewart or Julian Dicks?
Noble missed 11%
Stewart missed 13% (9% if you include rebounds)
Dicks missed 19%

However I'd have stuart taking a pen every day of the week. To sustain that level over 76 penalties is phenomenal. Especially in a day before all the stats and keeper preferences etc were analysed.

Some rules seem to fall into disuse.

I've probably practiced archery on ONE Saturday in my entire life, but I've never paid Henry VIII's archery tax, even though it's still on the books.

The obstruction rule seems to have gone the same way.
